The park is in the process of stabilizing and restoring the "B-2" building, which was built in 1971 as a temporary visitor center adjacent to the (then) main parking lot for the Lincoln Home. At the time, the parking lot was entered via 9th Street, which was also the legendary Route 66. Due to the association with Route 66, the building is considered to be eligible for the National Register. As part of an active city-run project to identify buildings and locations connected to Route 66, the Springfield visitors bureau is creating a series of wayside exhibits and installing them. To support this project, a concrete pad, approximately 48" x 36 x 6" will be installed on the alley side of the building, which is considered the front of the building. Because the building is directly adjacent to the Lincoln Home, putting the wayside in this location will allow the Lincoln Home to be seen from the wayside but the wayside, which is styled to resemble a 1950s chrome car emblem, will not impact the historic appearance of the Lincoln Home. The plan is to eventually open the building to the public as a Route 66 exhibit space.

The white concrete pad will be installed between the asphalt-covered alley and the original patio area outside the front door to the building to allow for all visitors to use the alley space to read the sign and look back on the Lincoln Home as well. The alley is only used by park maintenance vehicles such as Cushmans and lawn mowers. The area was heavily disturbed since the alley was installed in the 1840s and has remained in use as an alley and parking area since.

The pad location is considered temporary until the final design is made for the restoration of the building the area around it.
