Remove Sycamore tree next to south wall of Visitor Center for safety.

Lincoln Home National Historic Site » Remove Sycamore tree next to south wall of Visitor Center for safety. » Document List

The Sycamore tree, planted between the south wall of the Visitor Center and the main pedestrian walkway is dying and losing numerous branches any time there is a storm or windy day. Because those branches fall directly on the pedestrian walkway used by nearly every visitor and staff using the Visitor Center, the tree needs to be removed now before major limbs break off. The tree was planted in 1976 when the Visitor Center was built and has gotten too large for the space as well. The roots are raising the bricks in the walkway and threaten to damage the foundation of the Visitor Center. This area of landscaping is scheduled for renovation within two years, as is this part of the Visitor Center, so there are no plans to replace the tree.

In the 2017 Lincoln Home Tree Report, the tree was listed in good condition but with moderate cavities/decay in the trunk, weak attachments in the crown, and a suggestion to cable it to secure it.
