Stabilize the B-2 storage building (S-2) and remove termite damage

Lincoln Home National Historic Site » Stabilize the B-2 storage building (S-2) and remove termite damage » Document List

The "B-2" building located at the back of the Carrigan lot immediately north of the Lincoln Home was built in late 1970 or early 1971 as a visitor center by the State of Illinois. After transferring the lot and building with the Lincoln Home to the NPS in 1972, the building has also been an office and storage building, now entirely given over to low-priority maintenance storage. Because it is not often in use, a termite infestation and water damage were not discovered for many years. The termite infestation was treated in 2018. Because the building is being considered for the National Register of Historic Places and an exhibit space due to its proximity to Route 66, the building will be stabilized until further research and exhibit design is completed. Much of the interior paneling and studs may need to be removed due to rot and damage, which will be determined once demolition has started Materials will be replaced in kind. Some damage is also visible on the exterior, although not as extensively. Any siding and framing that is determined to be unsound will also be replaced in kind. Both interior and exterior will be painted white to match existing paint schemes.

The building also houses several utility connections, including gas meters, for the Lincoln Home and serves as a screen for employee parking near the Lincoln Home.
