Approximately 10 years ago, a Bradford Pear tree was given to the park and planted along the north side of Jackson Street near the park boundary and outside of the historic zone. It was planted in line with other trees between the sidewalk and the street in a space left by a previous tree that had died. At the time, it was considered a good "street tree" that would add shade and contribute to the aesthetic beauty of the park in spring with its blooms. Since then, the tree has been classified as an invasive plant by the State of Illinois and must be removed. The tree, which has a double trunk, is under 10 feet tall and the trunks are no more than 2-3" in diameter each. The trunk will be ground out. A native ornamental tree like a Red Bud or dogwood will be planted in the space.
