Remove damaged Silver Maple and Sweet Gum trees near Visitor Center and Cook House (HS-19) for safety

Two older trees, located adjacent to the public sidewalks were heavily damaged in a storm that hit the park on June 29, 2023. The trees, which were in fair to good condition, were unable to weather the storm and lost large limbs in the process. The larger limbs remain attached to the tree in all but one case in the sweet gum, but their locations immediately next to the busy public sidewalks make them safety hazards. The Maple was also discovered to have a hollow trunk. The trees will be removed and the trunks ground out. Neither are old enough to be Lincoln-era trees. Based on the 2014 Cultural Landscape Plan (pg. 5-15), these trees are part of the Maintained Landscape and do not include specific recommendations for the area beyond, "replacements should be made based on certified professional arborist recommendations." Local arborists will be consulted for recommendations for replacement trees. Preference will be given to Illinois natives, and for pedestrian safety, trees which do not drop seeds or fruits will be given priority.

Due to their size, the trees will be removed and the stumps ground by contracted laborers.
