Please join park staff and planners to learn about and discuss planning. You are welcome anytime during the hours identified below. The meeting will provide an opportunity for citizens to learn about and to comment on a Management Plan and Environmental Assessment for Goat Island.

Description:
Goat Island (also known as Jake's Island) is an approximately 800-acre island located in the channel of the Missouri River near Vermillion, South Dakota and within the congressionally authorized boundary of Missouri National Recreational River, a unit of the National Park Service and a part of the Wild and Scenic Rivers System. After decades of uncertainty surrounding the legal ownership, a land survey determined that the island belongs to the United States.

The purpose of the Management Plan is to guide future development, visitor use, and resource protection for Goat Island. This includes preparing an environmental compliance document that assesses potential environmental impacts of proposed activities. Goals for the plan are to ensure that the resources are left unimpaired for the enjoyment of present and future generations and to find management strategies that all parties can agree to for the island. Stakeholder input is vital to the success of this planning process.
