The public is invited to an Open House for the Cattle Point Road Realignment Project Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS).
The Federal Highway Administration and National Park Service propose to realign a portion of the Cattle Point Road located about 8 miles southeast of Friday Harbor, Washington in the San Juan Island National Historical Park. About 500 feet of roadway is threatened by coastal erosion. Coastal wind and wave action is eroding the base of the bluff that supports the road. The Cattle Point Road is the only vehicular access to public and private land at the east end of the Cattle Point peninsula, which is home to about 270 residents.

Description:
The DEIS for the project was released for a 60-day comment period on September 3, 2010. The comment period ends November 2, 2010. Print copies of the DEIS are available for review in Friday Harbor at the San Juan County Library, the National Park Service office, and San Juan County Public Works. A print or CD copy of the DEIS may be requested at cattlepointroad@dot.gov. The DEIS can also be viewed or downloaded at http://www.wfl.fhwa.dot.gov/projects/wa/cattlepoint/.
The purpose of the Public Open House is to obtain public comments on the DEIS. The event will be held in an open house format, which will consist of informational displays with project staff available to share information, answer questions, and receive comments. No formal presentations will be made. The public is invited to drop by anytime during the open house period.
You do not need to attend the Open House in order to provide official comment on the DEIS. Written comments may be submitted anytime during the 60-day comment period to Diane Spencer, Environmental Protection Specialist, FHWA, 610 East Fifth Street, Vancouver, Washington 98661; or by email to cattlepointroad@dot.gov. Your comments must be sent no later than November 2, 2010 to be considered as part of the official record.
