Katmai National Park & Preserve » KATM Wilderness and Backcountry Management Plan » Document List

Katmai National Park and Preserve and Alagnak Wild River include exceptional backcountry and wilderness areas within the national park system. The Wilderness and Backcountry Management Plan will guide the future management of the Katmai and Alagnak wilderness and backcountry areas. The purpose of the wilderness backcountry management plan is to preserve the wilderness character of Katmai's designated and eligible wilderness and guide the long-term management of visitor use and cultural and natural resources in both wilderness and backcountry areas of Katmai National Park and Preserve and Alagnak Wild River.

What areas will be included in this plan?
The project area includes designated and eligible wilderness in Katmai National Park and backcountry areas in Katmai National Preserve and Alagnak Wild River. Frontcountry areas are excluded from this plan.

Why is this plan needed?
The plan is needed to safeguard wilderness character, address the effect of concentrated and increasing visitation, and to provide guidance and direction for managing commercial and private visitor use.
