Re-pave the Denali Park Road, Milepost 0-3.4

The proposed project is to repave the Denali Park Road from milepost 0 (the park entrance) to milepost 3.4 (park headquarters).

No structural changes to existing pullouts are proposed for the project; currently paved pullouts would be repaved and existing gravel pullouts would remain gravel with their surface raised to meet that of the repaved road. Any replacement of culverts would be in-kind replacements, using culverts of the same diameter.

At the roundabout, the pedestrian walkway currently located at the center of the traffic circle would be removed and replaced with pavement, resulting in a wider traffic lane, easing the turn for large vehicles and eliminated a sidewalk that connects with no other pedestrian facilities.

The footprint of the road would remain the same as current conditions, with some modifications where the road is currently too wide or too narrow. The road will be brought to a consistent 24 foot width (with some variance to the 24 feet at corners and intersections). To account for the 2" rise in surface in some locations, additional gravel would be added to the shoulder, resulting in a negligible increase in the grade of the shoulders.

Construction is expected to begin in 2019 and continue through 2020. Contract language and project planning with ensure visitor and bus access, administrative access, and emergency access through construction zones.
