National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 Consultation


Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) requires federal agencies to take into account the effects of their projects on historic properties. The majority of the Park Road—including the project area—is part of a historic district listed in the National Register and an identified Cultural Landscape. Based on our review, the Polychrome Area Improvements project was determined to adversely affect historic properties. Consultation occurred with the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO), Tribes, and ANCSA corporations and the "adverse effect" determination was available for public review and comment for 30 days (per 36 CFR 800.5(c)). A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to mitigate the adverse effect was developed between the SHPO and Denali National Park, with input from consulting parties.
