The National Park Service Presents Alternative Concepts for Shoreline Protection Project at Fort San Juan de la Cruz (El Cañuelo)

The National Park Service (NPS) proposes shoreline stabilization in order to protect the landscape and the coastline along the Fortín San Juan de la Cruz (El Cañuelo), in Isla de Cabras, Toa Baja, Puerto Rico.

The design concepts will make the smallest possible imprint on the fort's maritime landscape. The shoreline protection measures would be located along the entire existing shoreline and revetments. The elements associated with the design concepts will improve the existing shoreline revetment, improve eroded uplands, and construct new rock revetment to protect the shoreline. The project will stabilize the Fort's shorelines, protect the park's maritime landscape and associated buildings from the imminent threat of failure and associated landward migration of the shoreline due to erosion.

The NPS encourages your participation throughout the planning process from April 1- April 30, 2021. NPS is requesting public involvement from interested agencies, groups, and individuals. During this time, the public and agencies are invited to identify any issues or concerns they might have with the proposed concept designs. Comments related to historic properties will also be gathered for the purposes of compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA.

The National Park Service will be hosting an open-house style public meeting to discuss this project. This meeting will take place on April 15, 2021 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the Raúl González Basketball Court in Palo Seco, Toa Baja.
