Draft Archeological Resources Management Plan

The National Park Service (NPS) is pleased to announce the release of the draft archeological resources management plan and environmental impact statement (Plan/EIS). The purpose of this plan is to manage and protect the archeological resources at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site while preserving natural resources and processes and enhancing visitor experience.

The plan provides a comprehensive iterative approach to address the threats to the park's archeological resources (i.e. river bank erosion, infrastructure placement, vegetation encroachment, and burrowing mammal activity). It evaluates the impacts of 3 alternatives and the NPS preferred alternative:

Alternative #1: no-action
Alternative #2: relocate facilities in the park
Alternative #3: locate facilities off site
NPS Preferred Alternative: incorporates elements of Alternatives 2 and 3

The Draft Plan/EIS is available for public comment, on this site, from November 4, 2016 to January 4, 2017 (12:00 PM EST).
