Wiese-Riverview Road Stream Channel Scoping Information

The City of Brecksville, in cooperation with the National Park Service is in the process of preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the restoration of a drainage channel in the Riverview-Wiese Rd. area. The EA will include discussions of the proposed project's potential impacts to environmental resources. This document is being prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and the regulations of the Council on Environmental Quality (40 CFR 1508.9)

The purpose of this project is to restore the existing drainage channel from the culvert under Riverview Rd. (approximately 250 ft north of Wiese Rd) northeast approximately 900 ft through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP). The culvert and drainage channel receives water from a 957 acre watershed. Over time, sediment has significantly filled the channel and culvert thereby greatly reducing the capacity to effectively transport flow, leading to flooding of roads and nearby yards. This flooding causes significant public health and safety concerns for those residing in the area and the traveling public. Deposition of these sediments onto park land also degrades the value and function of CVNP's streams and wetlands downstream of this area.

The EA will compare a No Action Alternative (status quo) to a Proposed Action Alternative which includes excavation and removal of the sediment, restoration of the drainage channel and relocation of some drainage through a new culvert.

The public is encouraged to provide input regarding these and other alternatives and the impacts of those alternatives on the environment.
