Historic Context on the Flushing Remonstrance


As part of the Special Resource Study, the National Park Service requested that these scholarly papers be prepared to help evaluate the place of the Flushing Remonstrance within the larger context of American Colonial History.

The first paper was drafted by Evan Hafeli, Associate Professor in the Department of History at Texas A&M University. Dr. Haefeli is the author of the book, "New Netherland and the Dutch Origins of American Religious Liberty" (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2012).

The second paper was drafted by R. Scott Hanson, Lecturer in the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Hanson is the author of the book, "City of Gods: Religious Freedom, Immigration and Pluralism in Flushing, Queens (New York: Fordham University Press, 2016).
