Assessment of Impact to the Outstanding Universal Value of the Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty was designated a World Heritage Site in 1984 for its artistic and engineering achievements and symbolism. In 2014, the World Heritage Committee adopted a statement of Outstanding Universal Value that further explains the importance of the Statue.

Not everything within a World Heritage site contributes equally to its OUV; however, those attributes that do contribute must be protected appropriately, and an impact assessment must be conducted when development is proposed. In compliance with the World Heritage Convention, the NPS prepared a separate heritage impact analysis for this project and submitted it to the World Heritage Centre for review. The assessment and the Statue's statement of OUV are shared below for the public's information.
