Eisenhower Memorial, Section 106 Consultation
This letter was sent to the DC State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in response to their comments on the most recent consultations with signatories and consulting parties for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial.
Despite substantial improvements to the design of the memorial since 2011, which included changes to the south tapestry and substituting two freestanding columns for the two side tapestries, the SHPO suggested that the Eisenhower Memorial Commission (EMC) develop illustrations of a proposal to eliminate the easternmost and westernmost bays of the tapestry.
The NPS understood that the changes may have further minimized adverse effects, but concluded that the proposal to reduce the tapestry by one bay at the east and west sides would do unacceptable harm to the essential concept of the memorial. For this reason, this letter informed the SHPO that the adverse effect of the south tapestry on historic properties had been minimized to the greatest extent possible, and that further studies of reducing the width of the tapestry were not warranted.
