Cathodic Protection for Calnev Pipeline

The National Park Service is extending the public scoping period for an additional 30 days. We are receiving comments through November 28, 2014.

The National Park Service and Kinder Morgan Energy Partners are working together to address the need for cathodic protection of the Calnev Pipeline in Soda Lake, Mojave National Preserve. Soda Lake was designated wilderness under the Wilderness Act. Its soils are highly corrosive for metal pipelines. Kinder Morgan Energy Partners operates two petroleum pipelines that cross Soda Lake. The sacrificial anode cathodic protection system that was protecting the two pipelines has exceeded its useful life; two solar-powered impressed current systems are protecting the pipelines but need to be enhanced for adequate, long-term pipeline protection. Public comments are welcome as the NPS and KMEP address pipeline safety, wilderness protection, and resource protection and conservation.
