Removal of Canary Island Pine in Aquatic Park District
This project is to remove one Canary Island Pine in the Aquatic Park District. The tree, which overhangs the sidewalk, is located on Van Ness Avenue, in front of an unused railroad tunnel.
The tree has a significant structural defect: the origin of branch growth is very low on the trunk, and most of the tree's weight extends out horizonally (in the same direction). Because of the tree's size, weight, and location, it is a safety hazard for pedestrians on the sidewalk, and vehicles/bicycles on Van Ness Avenue.
The Pine has been surveyed by an arborist, and it's removal was recommended at that time. The tree was not part of the district's cultural landscape, and its removal would not impact the district's historical significance.
An area around the tree has been cordoned off for safety, and the work will be performed in a manner which is safe for pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles.
