Removal of Canary Island Pine on Van Ness Ave

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park » Removal of Canary Island Pine on Van Ness Ave » Document List

This project is to remove one Canary Island Pine in the Aquatic Park District. The tree, which overhangs the sidewalk, is located on Van Ness Avenue, in front of an unused railroad tunnel.

The tree has a significant structural defect: the origin of branch growth is very low on the trunk, and most of the tree's weight extends out horizontally (in the same direction). Because of the tree's size, weight, and location, it is a safety hazard for pedestrians on the sidewalk, and vehicles/bicycles on Van Ness Avenue.

The Pine has been surveyed by an arborist, and its removal was recommended at that time. The tree was not part of the district's cultural landscape, and its removal would not impact the district's historical significance.

For safety, an area around the tree has been cordoned off, with informational signage. The work, which would include takedown and removal of the tree, would be performed in a manner which protects passing pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles.
