Tule Lake Unit Foundation Document

The NPS is pleased to announce the completion of the Foundation Document for the Tule Lake Unit of World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument.

Developing the Foundation Document was the first step in long term planning for the Tule Lake Unit. The Foundation Document includes the unit's purpose, significance, interpretive themes, and fundamental resources and values.

Although the Foundation Document is not a decision-making document and does not include actions or management strategies, it describes a shared understanding of what is most important about the Tule Lake Unit, including Tule Lake's primary themes that will be interpreted for the public.

The Foundation Overview is a summary version of the full Foundation Document. The Overview includes a park description, map, and the Tule Lake Unit's purpose, significance, and fundamental resources and values.

The full Foundation Document includes several additional components. For each interpretive theme, there are interpretive topics to be explored which provide more information about Tule Lake's unique circumstances during World War II. It includes issues that Tule Lake Unit is facing and a prioritized list of planning and data needs to address the issues. Tule Lake's historical background is written by Roger Daniels, Charles Phelps Taft Professor Emeritus of History, University of Cincinnati. Lastly, it includes an analysis of Tule Lake Unit's fundamental resources and values, such as current conditions, threats, and opportunities.

We invite you to read and share this Foundation Document. It is an invaluable document for guiding future management and planning decisions for the Tule Lake Unit.
