Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Section 106 - Status Update 01/2011

Consulting Parties:

The National Park Service (NPS), pursuant to the terms of the August 25, 2008 Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) regarding the establishment of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, wishes to notify consulting parties about a proposed refinement to the ranger contact station plaza.

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc has proposed (February 1, 2011) the following (see attached):

a. increase the length of the plaza from 136' to 144' (field conditions and observations support this slight increase of paved area).
b. increase the width of the plaza from 60' to 61'
c. relocate the bike racks from the plaza to the west side of the plaza adjacent to the pedestrian walk
d. simplify the paving pattern to one paver type with a smaller grid pattern.
e. remove the plaza paver grid work from the West Basin Drive sidewalk (NPS prefers this for circulation clarity)

The NPS believes these refinements do not result in a new adverse effect to the historic properties or the intensification of a known adverse effect that has already been considered pursuant to the MOA.

NPS is supportive of the refinements and we do look to submit this to CFA in February, and also to NCPC.

We look forward to your responses and would post the proposed refinements on the PEPC website for a 14 - day review and comment period.
