Repair and Rehabilitate the Petersen House - EA

The NPS announces the availability of the EA for the proposed repair and rehabilitation of the Petersen House (the House Where Lincoln Died). The EA also addresses the proposal to accommodate a connection from the rear porch of the Petersen House to the adjacent building 514 10th Street NW, which will house the Ford's Theatre Society's (a formal park partner with the NPS) Center for Education and Leadership (CEL). This new connection could also allow the NPS to make improvements to the rear porch in order to improve accessibility to the Death Room.

The purpose of the project is to repair and rehabilitate several sections of the Petersen House, which includes repairing the exterior; rehabilitating the interior; repairing the historic windows, casings, doors, and shutters; and installing a new climate management system. Repair and rehabilitation is needed because water damage has impacted interior and exterior historic fabric while the lack of humidity controls and ventilation system in the building have impacted the building and objects housed within the building.

In addition, the project also would provide a connection from the Petersen House to the adjacent Ford's Theatre Society CEL. This proposed connection would provide visitors access to the programs the CEL offers on President Abraham Lincoln. This connection could also provide the opportunity to provide certain level of universal accessibility into the Petersen House, by providing elevator access to the Death Room. All work on the interior and exterior of the house will be conducted in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
