27376 - Living History Moonlight Hikes


Annually occurring interpretive special event. Public hikes at sunset and after dark along the North Unit trail and the Yellow River bridge boardwalk trail that feature living history characters and historic equipment (clothing, muskets, etc.) spaced intermittently who speak to visitors from directly beside the hiking trail - usually on ground / grass normally maintained in the proximity of mound groups.

Small canvas historic tents are periodically used (8'L x 6'W x 4'H) setup with two wooden poles; no tent stakes used. Small weighted buckets will be used in leiu of stakes to set the corners and poles. Chewing tobacco, bread),historic cooking utensils, pots, tripods and kerosene or candle lanterns are used periodically by historic character demonstrators.Food approved for these events will not contain any non-native plants or seeds.

Visitor gathering and some historic characterizations also takes place on the VC parking lot island, and lawn immediately surrounding the VC. These areas are the same as the hiking trails, normally utilized by visitors and grass cut by mechanized equipment.

Detail for our 2010 events: NO tents, food or cooking items or kerosene lanterns will be utilized in 2010 (August 28 and September 25). There is no ground disturbance involved.
