Proposed Eel Ladder Construction at Dams 4 and 5 on the Potomac River, Environmental Assessment / Assessment of Effects, November 2009


You are invited to review the draft Environmental Assessment/Assessment of Effect for the proposed "Eel Ladder Construction at Dams 4 and 5 on the Potomac River" project. You can provide comments, via this website, regarding the proposed construction of eel passages. The passages are proposed to enhance the migration of the American eel and open up 120 miles of river habitat that is critical for the American eel's life cycle, The historic dams were built to supply water for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Today, the dams are owned by the National Park Service and are located in Washington County, MD.

Written comments, either through this website or via postal letter, will be accepted only during a 47 day public review period – closing January 8, 2010. Written comments must be submitted or be postmarked by midnight on January 8, 2010 to be considered.

Hard copies of the environmental assessment are available at Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park Headquarters, 1850 Dual Highway, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
