2008 Winter Use Plans Environmental Assessment
The purpose of this 2008 EA is to ensure that park visitors have a range of appropriate winter recreational opportunities, while ensuring that these recreational activities do not impair or irreparably harm park resources or values. The EA examined the environmental impacts of two different alternatives for managing winter use in the parks. Effects of the alternatives on parksoundscapes, air quality, wildlife, regional socioeconomics, visitor access, visitor experience, and park operations were analyzed.
The preferred alternative would allow up to 318 commercially guided, Best Available Technology snowmobiles and 78 snowcoaches per day into Yellowstone National Park, for up to three winters. In Grand Teton and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway, up to 50 snowmobiles would be allowed daily, without guiding requirements or the 3-year time restriction.
The EA is on public review from November 3-17, 2008. Note that comments must be postmarked or submitted on-line by November 17, 2008.
