Modification of the Visitor Center

Dear Interested Party,
The National Park Service proposes to modify the current visitor center by constructing a small, one room addition. Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site has had a need to construct a better visitor services facility since 1993. According to the park's General Management Plan of 1993, 8,000 square feet should be developed for contact and visitor services (with 6K for visitor center and 2K for exhibit space). For over 10 years the park has expected to receive funding to support the visitor center development. Due to changes in national priorities the earliest the park will likely receive funding will be between 2012–2016. Six to ten more years would be too long to defer the current needs of the park as the park outgrew the current 'temporary' visitor center over 10 years ago.
In the interim, the park needs to address three fundamental issues: 1. visitor services, 2. safety of visitors and staff, and 3. business efficiencies. The proposed modification addresses these issues until a larger, more accommodating, visitor center can be developed.

If you have any comments regarding this environmental assessment, please provide those to me at the above address by Monday December 4, 2006.
