Wilderness Stewardship Plan - Final EIS

The National Park Service has published a Notice of Availability (NOA) of the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Wilderness Stewardship Plan (plan/FEIS) at Isle Royale National Park in the Federal Register. The plan/FEIS are available here. The plan/FEIS describes how wilderness resources would be affected by the no action alternative and two action alternatives that address recreation opportunities and other management of wilderness, including the management of historic properties within wilderness.  The Wilderness Act requires the wilderness to be managed in a way that preserves wilderness character.  Alternative B is the Agency Preferred Alternative.

The FEIS evaluates the impacts of all alternatives considered in the plan and responds to substantive public and agency comments received on the Draft plan/DEIS during the 60-day comment period which began in August 2023.  A final decision on the Final plan/EIS will be documented through a Record of Decision signed by the Midwest Regional Director at least 30 days from the publication of the plan in the Federal Register. Notice of the decision will be announced through press release and on this website.
