John Coffee Memorial (TN River) Bridge Update Newsletter

The National Park Service (NPS), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is preparing an environmental assessment (EA) on the John Coffee Memorial Bridge (Tennessee River Bridge) Replacement project. The bridge is located along the Natchez Trace Parkway (Parkway), which spans the Tennessee River, six miles north of Cherokee, Alabama.

In 2022, NPS requested public input on the proposed project during a civic engagement comment period from October 25, through November 28. During civic engagement, NPS received 85 public correspondences, which included input on the impacts of a temporary bridge closure and the associated detour duration, particularly the potential impacts on travel operations and public safety, as well as access to recreational and community resources. Public comments were considered when developing preliminary alternatives by identifying needed studies, identifying appropriate design standards for environmental conditions, and by assisting with identifying methods to minimize potential resource impacts.

This newsletter provides stakeholders with recent actions and project updates on alternatives, resource considerations, and next steps in the planning process.
