Monumentwide Programmatic Agreement


Katahdin Woods and Waters is developing a programmatic agreement (PA) for its compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Section 106 asks the federal government to consider its treatment of historic resources, including sites, buildings, landscapes and archeological sites, while carrying out its duties. The PA would simplify the process by reducing the need for consultation for some repetitive actions with low probability for affecting historic properties. It builds on a Servicewide PA that has been in effect since 2008 but takes into account the specific conditions found at the Monument.

To learn more about Section 106 and how you can make a difference, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the agency that oversees the administration of the Section 106 process, has produced a Citizen's Guide to Section 106. A link to the Guide is provided below.
