Implementation: Board Camp Grove

Field surveys were completed in 2022 in Board Camp Grove, and the data indicate that natural regeneration is likely insufficient to support a self-sustaining population of sequoias within this grove.

Field data from 2022 are available for download below. This data was collected under a field study that was designed and implemented by the National Park Service (NPS), the United States Geological Survey (USGS), United States Forest Service (USFS), and the University of California, Davis. The NPS therefore requests that any use of this data for publication rely on the full data set (i.e., use of a subset of this data is not seen to be appropriate or in keeping with the methods of data collection) and that any user of this data for publication communicate in advance with the scientists who collected the data. Soderberg et al. 2023, in review, is also available for download below. This paper provides an analysis of the attached data, showing that the 2022 regeneration data has a less than 0.1% probability of the seedling densities being equivalent to those the second year after fire (see page 15).

Given the above, the NPS developed and approved a planting plan for Board Camp Grove and initiated a planting effort on October 17, 2023. Planting was performed by contractors, youth corps, and partners using hand tools and overseen by NPS ecologists and biological science technicians. The planting plan and approval documents are available below as well as a map that shows the grove boundary, extent of the planted area, as well as areas not planted due to adequate natural regeneration. Please note: exact boundaries of planted and unplanted areas are approximate in this map due to limitations in accuracy of hand-held units carried by planters; areas indicated as planted on the maps may have smaller areas within them that were not planted but are not shown on the maps.
