Revised Environmental Assessment (EA) and Decision (FONSI) - October 2023

The National Park Service (NPS) has reached a decision to plant seedlings in up to six sequoia groves and a proposed fisher critical habitat corridor should area-wide field survey data show insufficient natural regeneration in these areas to restore a self-sustaining population of sequoia following the 2020 Castle and 2021 KNP Complex Wildfires.

This decision is documented via a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) associated with the Re-establish Tree Seedlings in Severely Burned Giant Sequoia Groves and Adjacent Fisher Habitat Environmental Assessment (EA) which is available within the document list of this webpage. Because the decision tree outlined within the selected alternative inherently dictates that future, tiered decisions with regards to implementation will be needed (i.e., to implement planting or implement monitoring only), the NPS will be sharing regeneration data from each area and the findings of each area's decision tree on this project website (posted via the "Document List" link on the left-hand side of this page) and will do so prior to implementation if the decision tree indicates planting is needed. Some of this information has already been, and will continue to be, posted on this project website.

The full FONSI (incorporating all appendices), a revised EA, and a version of the revised EA showing where revisions were made can be downloaded below. As well, Appendix A- Non-Impairment Determination (NID), Appendix B-Response to Public Comments on the EA, and Appendix C-Response to Public Scoping Comments regarding the scientific basis for action are available for download as separate files. Also attached is a minor amendment to the monitoring component of the selected alternative in the FONSI, documented via a categorical exclusion. (Please note that the NPS ran into issues with making the signed amendment accessible in compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; the signed version is on file.)
