Madison Area Wastewater Treatment Project Environmental Assessment

The National Park Service (NPS) is proposing to replace the wastewater treatment plant at Madison Junction in Yellowstone National Park. The existing sewage treatment plant is aging and at risk of failure. A new wastewater treatment system would provide improved wastewater treatment (partial tertiary treatment) and protect park resources by preventing sewage spills, reducing odors, and improving views on the West Entrance Road.

The expected useful lifespan of wastewater treatment facilities is twenty to thirty years. The wastewater treatment plant at Madison was built around 1959. Sewage treatment is marginal during the summer season, and the plant is inoperable from October to May. The system has no backup power or overflow tanks. Most developments at the existing plant would be removed and relocated to the area near the existing percolation ponds. Facilities would be consolidated and removed from public view. Construction of the facility is planned to begin spring 2006. The new wastewater plant would be funded through the NPS Line Item Construction program.
