National Park Service Seeks Comments on Employee Housing Improvements at Devils Tower National Monument

The National Park Service (NPS) seeks feedback on proposed staff housing improvements at Devils Tower National Monument (Monument), Crook County Wyoming. The National Park Service is studying the employee housing conditions at the Monument. Currently, there is very limited housing available at the Monument and in the local communities. A new housing unit is needed to provide critical housing for permanent and seasonal staff including administrative, law enforcement, maintenance, resource management, and interpretation staff. The staff is critical to ensure safety and education to park visitors, resource protection, and facilities maintenance.

The existing 6-unit, single-story building was built in 1961 as part of the NPS Mission 66 program - an initiative launched to improve facilities by 1966, the 50th anniversary of the NPS. Since then, very few upgrades have been made to this facility and it is currently unable to meet park needs. None of the units adhere to physical accessibility standards, and there is no fire suppression system. Additionally, the lack of available housing in surrounding communities and in the monument is substantially impacting workforce recruitment. This at a time when the monument is seeing a significant increase in annual visitation and staffing needs are especially critical.

The National Park Service Please will be hosting a virtual Public Meeting to provide the public with an opportunity to learn more about this project and the design options to replace the obsolete housing at the Monument. There will be an opportunity to ask questions following the presentation. Please log in several minutes in advance to ensure you have a good connection and are ready to access the meeting when it begins.
