Yellowstone Youth Campus Plan EA

Yellowstone National Park » Yellowstone Youth Campus Plan EA » Document List

Yellowstone National Park has provided residential environmental education programs for youth of all ages for more than 35 years. Since 1978, these programs have been conducted at the Yellowstone Conservation Corps campus in Mammoth Hot Springs. Originally built for the Young Adult Conservation Corps, a work program partnership between the Department of Labor and the National Park Service (NPS), the existing facility can house approximately 60 program participants and is limited on one group at a time. The existing campus is inadequate to meet the park's youth education goals. The facility has limited flexibility for lodging, classroom, kitchen, and dining use, and cannot accommodate more than 60 individuals or multiple concurrent groups. The facility is in need of significant rehabilitation, or complete reconstruction, to better achieve the youth environmental education goals of the park as well as comply with modern standards for health, safety, and accessibility.

Design and construction work on an environmentally-sustainable education campus would include:
· Providing a safe, ADA accessible campus that meets modern health and safety standards;

· Rehabilitating or replacing the existing facility to provide exemplary multi-day experiential environmental programs that complement state educational standards, and offer opportunities for research and study of the natural world in a residential educational setting; and

· Creating an ecologically sensitive campus that protects Park resources, encourages responsible interaction with the environment, and attains a Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) designation.
