The NPS is undertaking an investigation to determine whether cleanup of lead and other heavy metals is necessary at a Site in Redwood National Park that has been used as a firing range for over 30 years by federal, state, and tribal public safety agencies.

* indicates the current step in the planning process
Step 1. conduct Preliminary Assessment of Site
Step 2. sample near-surface soils in areas where contamination is expected to be most significant
Step 3. conduct Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis
Step 4. prepare draft EE/CA report
Step 5. public review of the draft EE/CA report
Step 6. prepare final EE/CA report
Step 7. EE/CA Action Memorandum documents NPS decision on how to address contamination at the Site *

The NPS completed a Preliminary Assessment of the Site in 2011 which indicated the need for further soil testing. Soil samples will be obtained from the Site in December 2014 and analyzed in January 2015. The results of the analyses will be incorporated into a draft Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA). A formal public comment period on the EE/CA scheduled for July-September 2015 will allow public and stakeholder input into the NPS decision for Site clean-up. The EE/CA includes an investigation of potential environmental contamination and evaluation of alternatives and costs to address contamination at the Site.
