The National Park Service is evaluating a proposal from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to construct two engineered log structures in the White River floodplain within the wilderness area adjacent to State Route (SR) 410 within Mount Rainier National Park to address risks to the highway between milepost 58 and milepost 60. State Route 410 is directly adjacent to and within the floodplain of the White River in this area. The White River is a glacier-fed river that drains Mount Rainier's Emmons Glacier, the largest glacier in the continental U.S. outside of Alaska. Several locations along SR 410 have been damaged by past flooding. The proposed project is intended to address risks to the highway, preserving access to and through Mount Rainier National Park via the northeast entrance of the park.
The National Park Service is completing environmental planning, compliance, and consultation to evaluate the WSDOT proposal to meet the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act, National Historic Preservation Act, Endangered Species Act, Wilderness Act, and the Clean Water Act.
The National Park Service is currently in the early planning stages and is seeking public input to help identify potential issues or impacts, to learn of other existing information that would help with evaluating the proposed action, and to request input regarding other alternatives that should be considered to address the near-term risks at this location.
