Important steps in the Wupatki National Monument wilderness study process are outlined below, along with anticipated timelines for completion. During the planning process, the NPS will engage with affiliated tribes through consultation, as well as other agencies, stakeholders and the general public in the development of the study.

Step 1. Winter 2023: Initiate civic engagement
Step 2. Spring 2023 - Spring 2024: Analyze potential boundaries for wilderness proposal.
Step 3. Summer 2024: Begin compliance via National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA)
Step 4. Fall 2024: Begin public review and comment on draft wilderness study and NEPA document. *
Step 5. Spring 2025: Complete the wilderness study/EA and send to the NPS director.
