The park's living history fees are an alternate method of collection fees that runs independent from typical park entrance fees charged by most national parks. There is several reasons why the park is interested in switching to park entrance fees, but among them is the ability to waive entrance fees for national park pass holders.

The park's living history fees have not kept pace with the increase in cost of living over the past 25 years. If the park were to remain with living history fees, the park would seek a substantial increase in those fees to reflect today's valuation. Instead of keeping with and increasing living history fees, however, the park management is interested in converting over to the entrance fee system.

The park plans to hold four public meetings- -two in La Junta, one in Rocky Ford, and one in Las Animas. The purpose of the meetings is to describe to the public the park's plans and to gain public input.

The park will be accepting written comments for a period of 30 days, starting with the first public meeting, scheduled for May 25 at the Bent Country Community Center in Las Animas. Written comments must be post marked no later than June 28, and all comments must be received by July 6, 2021.
