The National Park Service (NPS) is beginning development of a Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) for Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. Development of the plan offers both the NPS and the public a unique opportunity to produce a comprehensive long-range vision for management of the area.

Description:
The 2001 General Management Plan (GMP) for Lake Roosevelt established overall strategies for meeting the general goals and purposes of Lake Roosevelt. Since that time, other management issues have surfaced that are not adequately addressed in the GMP, including the increase in private development along the shoreline, crowding of existing facilities, beach camping, and disposal of human waste. The Shoreline Management Plan will tier from the goals and objectives established by the GMP and provide for the level of detail needed to address these and other issues yet to be fully identified by the NPS and the public.

Superintendent Debbie Bird is very pleased to announce the first phase of the public involvement process, called "scoping." Scoping is designed to help identify a management vision and highlight what topics the public feels are most important to future management of the recreation area. "A great plan requires public involvement early and often in the process" said Bird.

Four scoping workshops have been scheduled to assist the public to learn more about the process and the issues the plan is expected to address. The meetings will be held in an open house format and park service representatives will be available to facilitate discussion and comments about the issues the SMP should cover. The scoping workshops are scheduled as follows:
