The National Park Service will examine and address the impacts and suitability of private vacation cabins along the shoreline of Lake Roosevelt at Rickey Point and Sherman Creek as it begins preparing a Vacation Cabin Environmental Assessment.

Description:
In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, the park will prepare an environmental assessment (EA) to guide decisions concerning the renewal of existing permits and the terms and conditions of the permits. The EA will look at a range of alternatives for the permitting of private vacation cabins to address public expectations and the protection of park resources.

The first step is to solicit public input during what is known as the scoping period. This is the time when any interested individual, organization, or agency can provide thoughtful, relevant information or suggestions for consideration by park managers before alternatives are developed and analyzed.

Three open houses have been scheduled to help the public learn more about the process and the issues the plan is expected to address. The meetings will be held in an "open-house" format and park service representatives will be available to discuss the EA throughout the meetings. No formal presentations will be made at the meetings but informational displays will be set up to facilitate discussion and comments about the issues and impacts the EA should consider. The open houses are scheduled as follows:

Written comments may be submitted at the scoping meetings or by mail to National Park Service, 1008 Crest Drive, Coulee Dam WA 99116. They can also be faxed to 509-633-9332 or sent via email to www.nps.gov/laro. Comments must be postmarked no later than June 27, 2008. Written comments will become part of the public record, and each will be considered in the plan.
