Installation of a New Elevated Water Tank for Ocracoke Sanitary District

Cape Hatteras National Seashore » Installation of a New Elevated Water Tank for Ocracoke Sanitary District » Document List

The Ocracoke Sanitary District (OSD) is requesting to relocate their water tank on Ocracoke Island. The Sanitary District is interested in amending its special use permit with the National Park Service to acquire an additional 100' x 100' tract for location of a replacement elevated water storage tank. The purpose of relocating the tank is to allow for the installation of a new, larger capacity tank that will safely serve the residents and visitors on Ocracoke Island.

The existing water tank holds 150,000 gallons and is 41 years old. This tank is getting close to the end of its life expectancy and OSD is planning for future water needs of the community by proposing to install a new elevated 250,000 gallon tank within the next five years.

An Environmental Assessment (EA) will be prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The EA will allow the NPS to determine if a special use permit (SUP) will be issued to allow for the installation of the tank. The SUP, if issued, would specify the location and conditions for the tank installation.
