KALAHAKU OVERLOOK AREA MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
Kalahaku Overlook Area Management at Haleakalā National Park -Environmental Assessment open for comments May 27, 2019 to June 27, 2019.
The National Park Service (NPS) is preparing an Environmental Assessment for proposed improvements to Kalahaku Overlook in the Summit District of Haleakalā National Park. The Kalahaku Overlook receives up to several hundred visitors daily. The proposed improvements would enhance the visitor experience and visitor safety, and protect natural and cultural resources. Improvements being considered include delineating and creating visitor use areas; installing signs; and repairing a historic trail.
The park plans to rehabilitate the Kalahaku Overlook Areas for visitor safety and enjoyment. Several options for this work are being considered. The options includes delineating and creating visitor use areas a variety of methods (which will need analysis in the EA), placing interpretive signs, and repairing a historic trail. The public is invited to provide input on the proposed actions, environmental and cultural considerations, potential alternatives, and any other relevant issues that should be considered.
The park will consult with the State Historic Preservation Division regarding potential impacts to the historic Kalahaku overlook area, and with the USFWS on impacts to threatened and endangered species. In order to comply with environmental and cultural regulations, the park is required to develop an EA for alternatives analysis for the work to be performed at Kalahaku. This EA is needed to complete the project.
Priorities for alternatives in the EA should ensure protection of natural and cultural resources (especially threatened and endangered species), the safety and enjoyment of park visitors, and positive community relations. The NPS will release the EA for a minimum of thirty (30) days for public review. Public input is encouraged and welcome during the public scoping period starting May 27th, 2019. Thank you for your interest.
