San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park proposes to institute an online reservation system for boats staying overnight in the Aquatic Park Cove which would include a $10/day anchoring fee. The Park currently issues permits at no charge using a paper system. A new system will make it easier for visiting vessels to schedule and obtain permits (especially vessels in-route), and for the Park to inform visitors entering the Cove about security issues, swimmer safety requirements, and environmental regulations (such as proper disposal of waste).
The park conducted a program review of its existing, paper-based permit system, and a comparability study of three different Bay Area sites that offer similar experiences, accessibility and amenities. The analysis showed that the park's present free anchoring permits are below similar operations and that, even with a fee of $10, Aquatic Park Cove will remain one of the most affordable anchoring experiences in the Bay Area. The park feels this new system, and fee increase, is consistent with the public's desire for convenient, affordable, and sustainable recreational experiences.
