In 2015, the National Park Service (NPS) finalized a White-tailed Deer Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (Deer plan/EIS) for Fire Island National Seashore. The Deer plan/EIS was approved through a Record of Decision in April, 2016. The purpose of the Deer plan/EIS is to address issues associated with the abundance and distribution of white-tailed deer within park boundaries. The issues include impacts from deer on the natural and cultural resources of the Seashore, as well as impacts resulting from deer-human interaction. Your participation was vital to our planning process.

The Deer plan/EIS was crafted in consultation with cooperating agencies (New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, U.S.D.A. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service). The approved management alternative includes a suite of management options and is detailed in the White-tailed Deer Management Plan for Fire Island National Seashore (Attachment A of the Record of Decision). These documents are available under the "Document List" in the navigation links to the left.
