CUIS Voluntary Land Exchange Pre-NEPA process

Cumberland Island National Seashore » CUIS Voluntary Land Exchange Pre-NEPA process

The NPS is considering the acquisition, through land exchanges (including conservation easements), four potential parcels of privately owned land within the authorized boundary of Cumberland Island National Seashore, Georgia. The National Park Service and Cumberland Island National Seashore have signed two preliminary agreements with private landowners on Cumberland Island. The agreements represent an early step in a proposed land exchange process that remains subject to additional review, including completion of an environmental assessment and a public comment period anticipated this fall.

The proposed exchanges are intended to address long-term management considerations for natural, cultural and visitor resources on the island and to consolidate land ownership in areas where National Park Service and private lands are intermingled. The National Park Service welcomes public participation and will provide additional information when the environmental assessment is released for public comment.
