Kauleolī Unit Management Plan
Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail » Kauleolī Unit Management Plan
The National Park Service (NPS) invites your participation in a planning effort for Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. The plan will focus on Kauleolī, a 95-acre shoreline parcel on the South Kona coast, acquired by the NPS in 2016 (63 acres) and in 2021 (32 contiguous acres).
To meet legal and policy requirements and fulfill its kuleana to Kauleolī, the NPS must develop a long-term management plan to guide natural, cultural and biocultural resource protection and establish appropriate uses. We have much to learn about Kauleolī and hope you can share what you know about her past, what has changed, and how she should be cared for in the future.
The Kauleolī Unit Management Plan will identify a long-term management vision for Kauleolī and help managers make decisions about how to protect resources, what activities and experiences are desired and appropriate, and what facilities and infrastructure are needed to support natural and cultural resource protection, as well as community and visitor uses.
The NPS has heard initial ideas to address these needs from community and staff members. We want to hear from you early in the process so that we can learn from you and incorporate your ideas into the development of the plan. We hope you will share your views on the ideas presented and suggest new concepts to be considered. The information we receive during this comment period will help refine these preliminary ideas, identify issues, and ensure that everyone has the information needed to move forward in the planning process together. The comment period begins on April 1 and will extend through May 15, 2026.
We also invite you to join us at the public meeting planned for April 18, 2026. Your participation is a key component of this process. At the meeting, trail managers will share preliminary concepts, answer your questions, gather your ideas, and learn about Kauleolī from those who are already connected to her.
We look forward to hearing from you!
