In December 2020, Public Law 116-253 authorized the Fallen Journalists Memorial Foundation to establish a commemorative work on Federal land in the District of Columbia to commemorate America's commitment to a free press by honoring journalists who sacrificed their lives in service to that cause. The memorial must be consistent with the Commemorative Works Act which ensures that commemorative works in areas administered by the NPS in Washington, D.C. are appropriately designed, constructed, and located. The NPS will be responsible for the memorial's long-term maintenance.
