Pollinator Habitat Restoration

his project proposes to restore approximately 4 acres of pollinator habitat that was previously mowed lawn. The cultural landscape report recommends converting these and other areas to natural native vegetation instead of mowed lawn. We plan to utilize the Pollinator Research Action Plan that was developed by the Federal Pollinator Health Task Force in 2015 (see attached plan). We will work with local native seed experts to secure seed sourced from the Mississippi River Delta Ecoregion. This project will also have an interpretive component as well. Naturalist Thomas Nuttall's journal specifically notates some of the flora he encountered at Arkansas Post and we would like to include a small interpretive sign or plaque to commemorate that.

No ground disturbance is anticipated for this project. We will first visually survey the field to see what plant species are present, then we will use herbicide to remove the undesired species. Next we will top seed native plants and cover with compost dirt produced inside the park. A combination of prescribed fire and herbicide will be used to control woody and other undesirable species. Measurable results include: increased pollinator habitat, decreased mowing hours and acreage, decreased carbon footprint, and enhanced visitor understanding and appreciation for native vegetation.
