Replace Cedar Shake Roof on the Barn B106 and Re-shingle & Repaint the Interpretation Office B101
Denali National Park and Preserve (DENA) is considering an undertaking to reroof Building 101 (B101, the Warehouse) and Building 106 (B106, the Barn). The existing cedar shake roofs were installed in the 1970's and have surpassed their lifespans and are in need of replacement. The project would entail removal of the cedar shakes and the installation of sub roofing material (plywood, ice and water shield) and galvanized corrugated metal roofing. B101 is currently used as the Interpretation office and B106 is the Planning office.. Neither buildings had metal roofs during the period of significance and, while there are other buildings in the Historic District that do have metal roofs, reroofing these two buildings in metal is not appropriate as it was not the roofing material present on the buildings during the period of significance and because the homogenization of roofing in the district which will be advanced by this project will result in a loss of individual character of the buildings and of the district.
As designed the proposed metal roofs will adversely affect B101, B106, and the Headquarters Historic District. It is recommended that Denali National Park and Preserve approach National Historic Preservation Act, Section 106, consultation under 36 CFR Part 800.5(1)(a) as "Adverse Effect".
