Exploring Visitor, NPS Staff, and Concession Staff Attitudes and Behaviors Regarding Waste in National Parks; renewal from pilot

Denali National Park and Preserve » Exploring Visitor, NPS Staff, and Concession Staff Attitudes and Behaviors Regarding Waste in National Parks; renewal from pilot » Document List

The purpose of this proposed study is to explore specific visitor, NPS staff, and concession staff attitudes and behaviors towards waste, and proper disposal of waste, in select national parks. This will be done through unobtrusive visitor observation paired with visitor surveys in park campgrounds, and electronic (internet-based) surveys administered to NPS staff and park concession staff, to better understand how national park managers can achieve waste management goals through effective educational and management strategies. Surveys will be voluntary and confidential.

Visitor observations will be unobtrusive, anonymous and confidential. Results from this kind of research would inform implementation of specific educational and management strategies designed to increase visitor compliance with proper waste disposal and help achieve long-term sustainability of National Park Service (NPS) units. Surveys will be conducted in park campgrounds.
